AppScript Enhancements Hot

by Lynn Mattie on June 09, 2015

Some minor improvements to AppScripts would be helpful:

  1. Ability to read/write BLOB field types
  2. Ability to run AppScripts on Aux table adds and edits immediately
  3. A few more high-level function calls that access code already written within SBM (e.g. Base64 encoding/decoding, etc)
  4. Access to TS_GUID

  • Hi,

this would be really helpfull, even with a better long term solution coming up. Currently AppScript is a fast and easy way to intercept transitions as well as to act as a server side script language (i.e. for AJAX). I think it is worth to improve here a little bit.

After review, we have decided to decline this idea with no plans to implement. In the future, we are envisioning an ability to provide external hooks to other scripting languages outside of SBM that could provide such functionality. By utilizing industry standard languages, it is expected that innovation will progress at a much faster rate and maintenance of a proprietary language would be minimized or eliminated.

    Dave,

The more I think about this, the more I think these enhancements should be completed. The current AppScript design may not be sexy, but it works well and works really fast. I have never needed any more modern language support, but have needed some functionality that is missing. I don't believe we have done hardly any maintenance on the current proprietary language in the last several years and even if we did support an outside language, the hooks to accomplish what I am asking for will still need to be created. AppScript is currently a very powerful tool for keeping our large enterprise customer happy, so please reconsider these very minor enhancement requests (probably all of these could be created with a couple of man weeks of development effort).
