If there is a possibility one of your users may GET a file, edit it, and DELIVER it from a different directory, this idea applies to you.

  • The end user and the administrators(myself) should not have to guess at what an error message means.
The error message below appears when a user tries to "Deliver" edited files from a directory without CM metadata (a non cm work area) in CM 14.1.0.4b:

"Error in Upload FileRequest: Rename from
    D:ServersTomcatworkCatalinalocalhostdimensions6nfgys8795.dirja32342.tmp to
D:ServersTomcatworkCatalinalocalhostdimensions6nfgys8795.dirUPLJHA Integration - SITRelease 2.0SRS_01099.docx was not successful

    Using Project 'JHA:TEST AND EVALUATION'.
Using 'D:ServersTomcatworkCatalinalocalhostdimensions6nfgys8795.dirUPL' as the Project work ara.
    ....
COR0006418E Error: File .... SRS_01099.docx does not exist"

It is not a really helpful error message and took a few weeks before I and Serena support could figure out what the error meant.
That error is generated when a user tries to deliver a file edit to CM from a non CM work-area location.

Dimensions CM does NOT recognize a file as an updated/edited file unless there exists associated .dm metadata files. Okay, fair enough... but at least give the end user a helpful message, instead of telling them Tomcat can't find a file.
    How about:
"There are files that exist with the same name as the files you are delivering. Dimensions CM is unable to deliver the files until the files are delivered from the correct CM work area so that all applicable metadata is available for the file"
    That's a start.

Sure, the user who delivers from outside a CM work-area has a training issue, but Dimensions CM could also do better error reporting to help us admins out.

If you think there is a possibility a user may GET a file out of CM, edit it, move it to another location on their machine... and then try to DELIVER that edited file from that other location, this idea would benefit your users.

Under consideration for a future release

Dimensions CM has a huge learning curve to use properly. The poor end-user error message reporting only gives my customers more ammo when complaining to their superiors about this tool. Bad error message reporting makes my customers, managers, and myself waste lots of time. They also waste Serena's time when I make tickets. It's almost as if some kind of black magic is involved in deciphering some of the error messages; it ought not be so. One of my customer groups is fighting to get other tools in the mix and based on this issue alone, I could understand why.
